Redditor Throws His Brother and Kids Out of His Rental Property and Asks – Is He a Terrible Brother?

A Reddit user has turned to the community after an arrangement with his brother led to a series of problems.

Helping Out His Brother

A few years ago, David’s brother needed help, so he offered him one of his rental properties.

They agreed to do it legally, with a lease agreement and everything else necessary.

David rented the property to his brother at a breakeven point, while his brother was responsible for all the house and yard maintenance.

Taking Advantage?

It seemed like a good arrangement at first.

However, problems arose when David’s brother’s family needed more than the hot water tank.

They wanted a new one, and he deducted the cost of the new tank and installation from that month’s rent.

A Disagreement

David reminded his brother of their agreement, stating that he was only renting the property to him at cost and that his brother was responsible for the maintenance of the property.

David’s brother argued that he wouldn’t improve the property for free.

An Argument Erupts

They had a big argument, and David ended up allowing his brother to replace the hot water tank.

However, David made it clear that his brother wasn’t allowed to make any further changes to the property without consent.

More Trouble

Things only got worse from there.

The house was old, and its wiring was only suitable for some modern electronics.

David refused, as he couldn’t afford to make such upgrades, given that he wasn’t making any money from the rental.

David’s brother started to get angry and, to voice his displeasure, started paying the rent late.

Unreasonable Behavior

David tried to talk to his brother, but his brother said that he had to buy some stuff for the house and that he was low on cash.

David tried to understand, but his brother’s behavior became increasingly unreasonable, and he stopped doing any maintenance on the property as a protest.

Irreconcilable Differences

The disagreements caused a rift between them, and it was apparent that there was no way to reconcile their differences.

David was getting infuriated by how this was going.

A Decision to Sell

It was common knowledge that the house was old, but it was in a neighborhood where developers bought at fair prices.

Since David wasn’t getting enough value on the home, he decided to sell it.

A Furious Phone Call

When his brother discovered the sale, he angrily called David, asking him what was happening.

David told him that the house was causing him headaches and he could make some money so he took it.

David’s brother said he should have offered him a chance to buy it, but David argued that his brother was having trouble making rent, so he wouldn’t get a mortgage.

What Did The Family Say?

David’s brother called him names and started to bad-mouth him to all their family members.

A few of them took David’s brother’s side, and they tried to say that he was being unreasonable.

Offer to Help

David offered them a chance to clear his brother’s debt to him, but none agreed to help.

Their parents, however, were on David’s side, and they said that he shouldn’t have rented to his brother in the first place.

Feeling Guilty

David felt terrible for his sister-in-law and the kids, but there was nothing else he could have done.

He thought his brother was unreasonable, and the rental arrangement wasn’t working. So, it was good that they both ended things and went their separate ways.

A Bad Brother?

A comment suggested that David shouldn’t have to bear the financial burden of helping out their brother.

“It was good of you to rent to him at a discount, and he didn’t thank you “for your hospitality,” the commenter said.

Although the commenter acknowledged that it’s unfortunate for the sister-in-law and children, it is evident that they are not David’s responsibility.

Another commenter agreed that it made sense for David to sell the house and get out of the situation, but they suggested that David should have given the brother more notice about the impending sale.

“I agree with this except for the “served” eviction notice, which will be legally tied to his brother’s name now while looking for another place.

Was there no less-nuclear way to notify him?” the commenter said.

David felt right to have evicted his brother and his family. But would you have done the same? Was he right to have sent his brother out despite knowing he had kids? What do you think?
