He Wouldn’t Go to School
The Original Poster (OP) is a witty and resourceful single mom who was determined to make her son, John, go to school.
Despite being a good kid who made decent grades, when he was 16 years old, he decided that he could pick and choose when he went to school.
Nothing Worked
OP tried everything in her power to make him go to school.
She argued with him, grounded him, and even dropped him off at school before driving to work. But nothing worked.
No Giving Up
It was a rough time for their relationship, as she jokingly says, “Sometimes I wanted to wring his neck, but he was a foot taller than me and built like an ox.”
But this mom wasn’t about to give up on him.
Breaking the Law
In Texas, if a child doesn’t attend school, the parents can be held responsible, up to and including jail time.
One day she received a notice from the city that further truancy would result in charges, and she was freaking out.
No Reaction
She told John to try and shock him into action, but he was dismissive of the notice and said nothing would happen, so the problem continued.
But she was not one to be defeated so easily.
Making a Plan
One day, she asked for a favor from a local police officer, who was engaged to a woman on her team at work.
In exchange for a case of beer, he agreed to help OP with her son’s truancy problem.
A House Call
She waited for a day when she knew John was skipping school, then called the police officer.
He went to her house and pretended to be a police officer, banging on the door and yelling, “Open up! Police!”
Warrant for Arrest
John answered the door, and the police officer gave him a fake warrant for his mom’s arrest for failing to make John go to school!
He told her son to pass the message on to his mom that he’d be back in a few days.
Melt Down
John was devastated and fell apart.
He called her crying, barely able to speak, and apologized over and over!
When she got home, she found him a shaky mess and white as a ghost. He couldn’t even eat dinner.
Feeling Guilty
She felt bad about how upset John was – she had planned on telling him that she had set him up, but when she saw how much it had affected him, she couldn’t bring herself to.
Instead, she assured him that everything would be okay and that she’d call the city and try to take care of it.
Lesson Learned
The next morning, John was up and dressed early, and there were zero arguments about him going to school.
And it went that way all the way through to his graduation!
She had finally found a way to make John go to school, and it was all thanks to her resourcefulness and a case of beer.
The Confession
Years later, OP confessed to John that she had staged the whole thing.
He was grown up enough to realize that his mom had done it with his best interests in mind, but he was still pretty angry!
Nevertheless, she knew that it was one of the best investments she had ever made.
