Recently, OP and his mother drove to pick up his child and a friend of hers from a school event.
She Gives off Bad Vibes
He mentioned in his post that, although his mother accepts him, she has sometimes given off homophobic vibes.
LGBT Playlist
As this month is Pride, OP had created a playlist with a pride theme called “Got That Gay Panic.”
Every song is either about being LGBT or was written or performed by an LGBT artist, or both.
She Did Not Enjoy the Tunes
OP’s mother first took issue with the song “We’re here, we’re queer.”
She claimed that the song dropped the three-letter “F” word and how that was wrong.
She Had Misheard
She said, “Well that’s what I heard,” when OP reminded her it wasn’t what the song’s lyrics indicated.
OP ignored her and continued to drive and listen to his music.
“You Can’t Pray The Gay Away”
Then Laura Bell Bundy’s song “You Can’t Pray The Gay Away” started playing.
OP’s mother is a devout Christian and she was furious with the song!
Lyrics About Pastors
OP mentioned that the song doesn’t include anything offensive.
Its lyrics only discuss how pastors are wrong and that you cannot pray yourself gay.
No Curse Words
There were no bad words and only the “D” word qualifies as a swear.
But after hearing that song, OP’s mother forced him to turn the music off.
My Car, My Playlist
OP replied, “No, I’m going to listen to gay music in my own car during pride month.”
Closet Homophobe
She never said anything, because she knew that OP would get upset.
But this whole incident confirmed OP’s suspicion that his mother was still covertly homophobic.
He Skipped Any Songs That Contained a Profanity
OP says he wanted to play a song that contains both profanities and is anti-Christian, but he felt bad and skipped it.

One Reddit user wrote, “My mom was overly religious too, she also hated my music. I have a vivid memory of her acting in the opposite way with my little brother, who she desperately wanted to keep on her side. She loved his music and hated mine.”
