In a controversial showdown at the 2023 FIE Veteran Fencing World Championships, transgender female fencer Liz Kocab made history as she secured her eighth world championship title.
Liz Kocab’s Stunning Victory in Vet Women’s Epee
Her victory in the Vet Women’s Epee category against the formidable 14-time champion, Marja-Liisa Someroja of Finland, sent waves through the fencing world.
Kocab’s Second Win in the 70+ Age Category
This triumphant event unfolded in Florida, marking the second time Kocab claimed the title in the 70+ age category.
Supporting USA Fencing
Following her win, Kocab expressed her commitment to supporting USA Fencing, stating, “I wanted to support USA Fencing. I really did.
Otherwise, I was actually thinking of stepping away. But the fact that it was in America, I thought that was important to support the USA. This is my way of saying thanks to USA Fencing.”
Controversy Surrounding Kocab’s Victory
Kocab’s victory, however, was not without controversy, as questions arose about her participation in the women’s category.
The Challenge of Inclusivity in Fencing
SA Fencing took significant steps towards inclusivity by implementing its transgender and nonbinary athlete policy in November 2022.
USA Fencing’s Transgender and Nonbinary Athlete Policy
Under this policy, athletes are allowed to “participate in USA Fencing-sanctioned events in a manner consistent with their gender identity/expression, regardless of the gender associated with the sex they were assigned at birth.”
Promoting Equality and Fairness for All
In a news release, USA Fencing emphasized that this policy is an “important first step toward expanding access to the sport of fencing and creating inclusive and safe spaces that promote equality and fairness for all.”
CEO Phil Andrews’ Support for Transgender Athletes
CEO Phil Andrews affirmed the organization’s support for transgender athletes, stating, “Even as we plan to conduct more scientific research into the physiological effects of gender transition as they pertain specifically to the sport of fencing, we remain unanimously and steadfastly supportive of transgender athletes having their place in fencing.
To be clear, even as this issue evolves, our support of transgender athletes will not waver.”
Requirements for Transgender Female Veterans
The policy outlines specific requirements for transgender female veterans, juniors, and senior athletes participating in national ranking competitions.
Athletes undergoing testosterone suppression treatment may continue to compete in men’s events, but they are eligible for women’s events only after completing one calendar year (12 months) of testosterone suppression treatment, provided they can furnish proof of compliant hormone therapy.
Kocab’s Transition Timeline
The precise timing of Kocab’s transition remains undisclosed.
Her remarkable success in her 60s was recently celebrated in a blog post by Transas City, which also highlighted Kocab’s height at 6 feet, a characteristic that may have contributed to her fencing prowess.
Liz Kocab’s Impressive Fencing Legacy
In her earlier years, Kocab, then known as Greg, was an accomplished fencer who represented Detroit Mercy.
She was a pivotal member of the 1972 NCAA National Championship team and earned the distinction of being an All-American in 1973.
To commemorate her extraordinary contributions to the sport, Kocab was inducted into the Detroit Mercy Titans Hall of Fame in 1987.
Critics Take Aim At Kocab
However, not all voices are celebratory of Kocab’s victory. Riley Gaines, a former competitive university swimmer and a vocal critic of including transgender women in female sports, vehemently opposes Kocab’s win.
Champion or Cheat?
Gaines declared, “Winning a title as a male in the women’s category doesn’t make you a champion. It makes you an entitled cheat.”
Liz Kocab’s triumph has sparked a huge conversation about inclusivity, gender identity, and athletic achievement.
