In a stride towards inclusivity, hundreds of primary schools across the United Kingdom have embraced gender-neutral school uniforms. Here’s the full story.
The New Uniform Policies
Abandoning the demarcation of boys and girls, these schools have embraced the use of “Uniform A” and “Uniform B” to allow children, some as young as four, to express themselves through clothing that aligns with their self-identified gender.
Many Schools Have Adopted the Policies
One of the most renowned institutions to adopt such policies is Brighton College, known for its prestigious status and high fees, which can reach up to $79,000 a year.
Uniform A and Uniform B
At Brighton College, the uniforms are now referred to as “Uniform A” and “Uniform B.”
The headmaster, Richard Cairns, has expressed his desire to “give transgender children personal leeway.”
Not a Limited Move
The move towards gender-neutral uniforms is not limited to primary schools and colleges.
The Third Option
Wellington, a private boarding and day school in Somerset for both boys and girls, has introduced “Uniform C.”
Considered and Thoughtful Choice
This approach allows students to make a “considered and thoughtful choice” about their clothing while maintaining specific guidelines that prohibit combining elements from all three uniform options.
Self-Identified Gender
Blofield Primary School in Norwich modified its uniform policy to allow children aged four to eleven to select clothing based on their self-identified gender.
The Criticism
However, not everyone is on board with this shift.
Critics argue that these changes may be detrimental to children’s mental health, leaving them confused about their gender identities.
The Concerns
Chris McGovern, the retired head and chairman of the Campaign for Real Education, said, “Schools are adding to the mental health problems of children who, after going into school, no longer know what gender they belong to.”
Government Needs to Intervene
“It’s time we had a government with the backbone to intervene,” he added.
Should Parents Challenge These Adoptions?
Lucy Marsh, from the Family Education Trust, echoes these concerns and suggests that parents should unite to challenge the adoption of gender-neutral uniforms.

A third user commented, “Was on board with this until I read the bit that said they can’t make their own combination of A, B, or C. But overall, if we want to get away from “you’re a girl if you wear a skirt” gender stereotype, then let all students pick whatever they want, not just “trans” students.”
