A Reddit user recently posted on a Reddit subthread to ask if they were in the wrong for not giving a gift after they were uninvited from the wedding.
Invitation Accepted
The Original Poster (OP), a 32-year-old male, received an invitation a few months ago to attend the wedding of an acquaintance (M).
Although OP was not particularly close to M or her fiancé (G), he enjoyed weddings and accepted the invitation.
A Thoughtful Gift
OP, who had a successful career and loved indulging in gift-giving, spoke with M and G about their upcoming wedding.
In an effort to be generous, he promised the couple a custom-made gaming PC as a gift, knowing they both enjoyed gaming together.
Quite Extravagant
M and G were grateful for the gesture and expressed their thanks.
The cost of the PC totaled a little over $1500, not including the monitor that OP offered to include.
Uninvited
Two months ago, M informed OP that he was being uninvited to her wedding due to a cost-cutting measure.
A Huge Disappointment
Although she apologized and explained that it was solely due to financial constraints, OP felt disappointed but chose to let the matter rest.
However, about a week later, a mutual acquaintance informed OP that M had actually revoked his invitation to make room for some of the groom’s family members who had decided to attend.
Angry and Resentful
Feeling angry and resentful, OP decided not to follow through on his promise to gift M and G a custom-made gaming PC.
The Wedding
Despite this, M’s wedding took place two weeks ago and appeared to have been a lovely ceremony.
No Gift for Them
Following the wedding, M sent OP a text message asking about the status of the promised gaming PC.
OP requested a phone call instead and informed M that he had decided not to follow through on his gift-giving promise since he was not invited to the wedding.
Holding a Grudge?
An argument ensued between the two, with M accusing OP of being petty and holding a grudge over not being invited.
He Knows the Truth
OP refrained from revealing what he had learned from a mutual acquaintance in order to protect their identity.
Venting to Friends
M referred to OP as petty and proceeded to vent her frustrations to their mutual friend group.
In response, OP decided to explain the full story to a select group of individuals.
Taking Sides
While most of them sided with OP, some pointed out that weddings can force people to make difficult decisions that are not meant to be taken personally.
Feeling Uncertain
OP found themselves doubting their initial reaction to the situation with M.
While wondering if they were being overly sensitive, they also acknowledged that M had lied to them and uninvited them from the wedding while still expecting an expensive gift
Here’s What People Said
Several Reddit users commented on OP’s situation with M, stating that M was being delusional for expecting a gift from an uninvited guest.
Some felt that it was already over the top for OP to give such an expensive gift, even if the invite wasn’t retracted.
Others pointed out that invitations were promises and M had broken her promise to OP, so he was well within his rights to break his.
Many users agreed that M invited OP for the gift and then uninvited him after securing it, making the situation even more unacceptable.
Some suggested that M should use the money she saved by uninviting OP to buy the PC instead. Overall, the consensus was that OP was not to blame in this situation.
What do you think? Should OP still have gifted the promised PC? Leave a comment!
