A Reddit user poured out her heart on a thread to see if they should give some of her inherited money to her late husband’s parents.
Husband Passed Away
Her husband was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer at the young age of 32 and tragically passed away less than two years later.
Full Time Caregiver
During his illness, his wife, Cara, was his primary caregiver.
Leaving Job
She eventually ended up quitting her own job to care for him full-time during the last 10 months of his life.
His treatment was complex, and he required 24-hour care, making it difficult for his parents to manage. Cara had to hire a nurse when they were not available.
Soulmates
Despite the challenges, Cara loved her soulmate with her entire heart and never once considered not caring for him.
It was natural for her to put her soulmate’s well-being and care above everything else in her life.
Totally Alone
When her soulmate passed away, Cara was alone with just a car, a dog, and an urn.
She had no job, no home (she had been living with her soulmate’s parents until he moved to hospice), and had not maintained any friendships in the city where she was living.
She didn’t have any of her own family nearby either.
The Inheritance
Initially, Cara was uncomfortable discussing her soulmate’s will and how the money from his life insurance policy would be distributed, but she eventually talked about it.
Distribution of His Will
Her soulmate came from a wealthier family, and Cara was worried that others might think she had manipulated her soulmate to get the money.
Cara asked her soulmate to make the decision about the distribution before he died.
Despite her soulmate’s insistence that his family would never think that way, Cara was raised in a family where money was an uncomfortable topic, and she convinced her soulmate to leave her out of the decision.
Siblings and Wife Receive the Money
In the end, her soulmate decided to leave Cara with 60% of the money and the remaining 40% would be divided equally among his four siblings.
None of the money was left to his parents.
Put the Money to Good Use
Her soulmate justified this by stating that Cara had left her job to care for him, had no family nearby to help, and no home, and that she would need help building their life back up.
Paying Off Loans
Her soulmate also wanted Cara to use some of the money to pay off her student loans, go back to school to get another degree and buy a home so she would not have to look for a rental with their 80-pound dog.
An Awkward Conversation
When her soulmate passed away, his sister became the executor of the will and asked Cara if she wanted to give some of the money to their parents since they were not included in the will.
He Didn’t Want Any Money Left to His Parents
However, Cara declined since her soulmate had made it clear that they did not want any of the money to go to their parents.
Inner Conflict
Cara felt conflicted about the situation and wondered if they were in the wrong.
The sister believed that Cara should have given some of the money to their parents, but Cara was unsure.
Feeling Guilty
She felt guilty about receiving such a large sum of money, which was more than two years of her annual salary when she was working.
Cara was unsure if giving away a portion of the money would make much of a difference.
Getting Back on Her Feet Again
However, she did acknowledge that when Cara’s soulmate passed away, they were left with nothing and needed the money to get back on her feet.
