In a new study conducted by the Cultural Currents Institute, it has been revealed that Google searches related to sexual orientation and gender identity have seen an unprecedented surge since 2004. Here’s the whole story.
An Upward Trend
According to the study, Google searches for “Am I gay?” and “Am I lesbian?” have increased by 1,300% in the United States.
Phrases like “am I trans” and “how to come out” have also experienced a remarkable upward trend during this period.
The Most Searched Phrases
Leading the charge in these searches is the state of Utah, where more individuals are Googling “Am I gay?”, “Am I lesbian?”, and “Am I trans?” than in any other state across the United States.
A Surprising Front-Runner
Utah, known for its traditionally conservative social values, emerged as a front-runner in three out of five search term categories.
Unique Geographical Perspective
The Cultural Currents Institute shared that the regional disparities in search patterns offer a unique geographical perspective on the journey of sexual orientation and introspection in America.
The Poignant Search Term
Furthermore, a poignant search term, “how to come out”, has garnered the most attention in traditionally conservative areas, including Mississippi and Kentucky.
A Broader Trend
These findings align with a broader trend in recent reports, which shows that younger generations are increasingly likely to come out as LGBTQ+.
Gen Z Individuals Are Twice as Likely to Identify as LGBTQ+
Census data from England and Wales, released in January, revealed that Gen Z individuals are twice as likely to identify as LGBTQ+ compared to the overall population.
A striking 6.91% of 16 to 24-year-olds identified as lesbian, gay, or bisexual.
A “Wake-up Call”
LGBTQ+ charity Stonewall has shared the significance of this data, calling it a “wake-up call” for politicians to prioritize the community’s needs.
The Public Shared Their Views
Several online users expressed their thoughts on the incident.
One user wrote, “It is amazing how people position this as a good thing. It’s a clear indication of social engineering through the media.”
I Don’t Believe Google Has the Answers
Another user added, “And Google is going to be able to answer this for somebody, how? I hope everyone can find their place in this world, but I don’t believe Google has these answers for you.”
The Poor Kids Are So Confused
A third user commented, “Not surprised. The poor kids are so confused. The groomers have been working very hard recently. It is a social contagion.”
Gender Nonsense
A fourth user wrote, “Well, yeah. When you confuse the language around sexuality with gender nonsense, people have to use Google to figure out the most inane and self-evident things such as sexuality.”
